This is the lesson our site was practically founded on, and the physics haven't changed since — a turntable is a turntable. What's changed is why you'd build a vinyl rig in 2026: for the feel, for the discipline, for scratching, for a record collection that outlives every file format. Here's the classic checklist, with modern prices attached.
The shopping list for a full vinyl setup:
- 2 × turntables
- 2 × slipmats
- 2 × cartridges and styluses (often included, always replaceable)
- 1 × mixer
- 1 × headphones
- amplification (powered speakers or amp + passive pair)
One spending rule towers over the rest: put your money in the turntables. A budget mixer on great decks works fine and upgrades cheaply later. A great mixer cannot rescue bad decks — and bad decks will actively teach you wrong, drifting off pitch and blaming your hands for it.
Direct drive or belt drive
The eternal beginner question, and the answer hasn't softened: direct drive. Not negotiable if you can possibly help it.
- Belt drive turns the platter with a rubber band. The band stretches, slips, and hesitates: pitch wanders while a record plays (there goes your beatmatch, through no fault of yours), startup is lazy, and a hand on the platter for cueing or scratching strains the whole mechanism. Belt-drive decks are for listening to records. As DJ instruments, they'll waste your practice hours and then die.
- Direct drive motors the platter directly: strong startup torque, pitch that stays put, and total indifference to your hands being all over the record — which, as a DJ, they will be.
Cheap direct drive beats expensive belt drive, every time. The used market is your friend here: the Technics SL-1200 ran clubs for fifty years and refuses to die (used ones outlive their owners), and modern direct-drive workhorses from Audio-Technica, Reloop, and Pioneer DJ cover every budget below that.
Pitch control: the actual instrument
Whatever deck you buy must have a proper pitch fader — the long slider, ideally running the full right-hand side of the deck — with at least ±8% range. That fader is where beatmatching physically happens; its length is your precision. A deck with only 33/45 RPM buttons, or a stubby pitch knob, is a hi-fi component cosplaying as a DJ deck. Slipmats
The felt circle between platter and record, and the cheapest transformative purchase in DJing: it lets the platter keep spinning while your hand holds the record still — which is the entire mechanical basis of cueing and scratching. Rubber hi-fi mats grip; that's the opposite of the job. Buy actual DJ slipmats (a few dollars, every DJ shop). Scratch DJs chasing extra slip put a sheet of wax paper under the mat — an old trick that still works and still costs nothing.
Cartridges and needles
The cartridge and its stylus turn groove into signal, and they're a wear item — budget for replacement styluses like guitarists budget for strings. DJ cartridges trade a little audiophile delicacy for tracking that survives backcueing and scratching. The spherical-tip workhorses (Shure's M44-7 was the legend; Ortofon's Concorde series carries the torch now that Shure's out of the game) hold the groove hard and are kind to records.
Set the tonearm up properly — counterweight balanced then set to the cartridge's recommended force, not cranked to maximum "so it won't skip." Too heavy carves your records; too light skips more. The manual takes ten minutes. Your records last decades. Fair trade. Scratch-specific setup tricks (tonearm height, weight games) live in the scratching lesson.
The mixer
For a first vinyl mixer you need exactly: two phono channels, channel faders, a crossfader, per-channel gain and EQ, and a headphone cue section. That's it. Kill switches and a replaceable crossfader are lovely extras (essential if scratching is the plan — see DJ 202); effects sections and Bluetooth are shelf decoration at this stage.
One thing that will bite you: phono vs line inputs. A turntable's raw output is tiny and needs the mixer's phono preamp stage. Plug a turntable into a line input and you'll get a whisper; plug a line-level source into a phono input and you'll get distorted soup. Check the back panel: you want inputs switchable between phono and line, or at least two dedicated phono ins. (Some modern turntables have line-level output built in, which sidesteps this — check yours.)
Amplification
Turntable-and-mixer rigs need something to make noise into. Three routes:
- Powered (active) monitors — speakers with amps built in, straight from the mixer's output. The modern default: clean, compact, loud enough for any bedroom.
- Amp + passive speakers — the classic hi-fi route; fine if you already own it. Connect the mixer to a line input (AUX/CD), never the hi-fi's own phono input (see above).
- The family stereo — how everyone actually started. Just don't blow it up mid-breakdown; hearts and speaker cones have both been broken this way, and you'll get the blame for even a coincidence.
