Built to prove a point about Romania
UNTOLD launched in 2015 at Cluj Arena, the same year Cluj-Napoca held the title of European Youth Capital, with a debut lineup that included Armin van Buuren, Avicii, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and ATB. According to the festival's own production team, some of those early headliners had never heard of Cluj or Romania before booking; one reportedly stayed on his private jet until someone confirmed the festival was real. Roughly 240,000 people showed up anyway, and UNTOLD won Best Major European Festival at the European Festival Awards for that debut season, the first festival ever to win the award in its first year.
A main stage that gets bigger every year
UNTOLD is organized by Untold Universe, the Bogdan Buta-led group that also runs the sister festival Neversea on Romania's Black Sea coast. The production has scaled up dramatically since 2015: a 13-ton dragon-head centerpiece in 2017 that had to be built in Belgium and installed two hours before doors opened, a 16-ton stage in 2019, and by 2023 a Phoenix-themed mainstage standing 34 meters tall and more than 95 meters wide, the tallest the festival had built. Alchemy, a separate stage dedicated to trap and drum and bass, has become one of the festival's fixed identities alongside the mainstage spectacle.
From 240,000 to nearly half a million
Attendance has climbed almost every year since launch, reaching roughly 470,000 people from 150 countries at UNTOLD X, the festival's 10th-anniversary edition in 2025, which included a tribute to Avicii, who played the first UNTOLD in 2015 and died in 2018. By 2024 the festival ranked third in DJ Mag's global reader-voted festival poll, behind only Tomorrowland and EDC Las Vegas.
