Built to answer a hometown question
ARC Music Festival began as a question producer John Curley asked in 2020, deep in the pandemic: why didn't Chicago, the city that invented house music, have a festival of its own? Curley, who had run Chicago's club scene since the early 1990s through his company Paradigm Presents, teamed up with Nick Karounos and Stuart Hackley to found Auris Presents and build an answer. ARC debuted September 4-5, 2021, at Union Park in the West Loop, a few blocks from the original Warehouse nightclub where house music got its name.
From two days to a Labor Day weekend fixture
The festival has grown every year since its debut, adding a third day by 2023 and expanding further by its fifth anniversary in 2025. It runs every Labor Day weekend, pairing Chicago house pioneers like Green Velvet, Mike Dunn, and Honey Dijon with international techno and house acts across stages including The Grid, the techno-leaning Expansions, and the carnival-themed Elrow. Area 909, added in 2023, is built specifically around the musical bond between Chicago house and Detroit techno.
The festival doesn't end when the park closes
ARC extends past Union Park through nightly After Dark club events at Chicago venues including Smartbar, Spybar, and Radius, folding the city's existing club culture into the festival week rather than competing with it. Co-founder Stuart Hackley has described the mission as both cultural and educational: bringing house music back to be showcased in the city where it started.
