Reason Studios put a free version of its Rack inside everybody else's software. From August 27, Reason Free installs as a VST3, AU or AAX plugin, and Reason Studios lists Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase, Bitwig, Reaper and GarageBand among the hosts that can load it. The company says there is no trial period, no expiration date and no watermark.
Read the wording carefully, because it is doing work. This is not the paid Reason product going free. It is the Rack, Reason's devices-and-cables environment, arriving as a plugin inside whatever you already open at night.
What you actually get
Fifteen devices. Instruments are Europa, Kong, ID8 and Monotone. Effects are Scream 4, The Echo, Audiomatic, RV7000 MkII and MClass Maximizer. Then there is the group that makes the Rack behave like the Rack: Scales and Chords, Combinator, Pulsar, Spider Audio, Spider CV and MIDI Out.
By function: Kong is the drum designer, Scream 4 covers distortion and saturation, The Echo is a stereo delay with modulation and filtering, RV7000 MkII is the reverb, MClass Maximizer is the limiter, and Audiomatic puts vintage and lo-fi character under one knob. Scales and Chords keeps parts in key.
Combinator is the one to understand early. It stacks instruments and effects into a single device with your own macro controls. The two Spiders merge and split audio and CV, Pulsar adds modulation on top, and MIDI Out sends to external plugins and hardware. That routing layer is the part of Reason that does not translate to a normal plugin folder.

Where the free part stops
The installer also carries the Reason DAW, but the free tier caps you at 16 audio or instrument tracks. Beyond that is the paid path: Reason+ includes the full DAW and what Reason Studios counts as more than 90 instruments, effects and Players.
What the announcement does not settle is the stuff that decides whether Reason Free stays on your drive: whether Rack Extensions and ReFills load in the free Rack, what account and download steps sit between you and the plugin, and which OS builds are supported this month. Check those on Reason Studios' own page before you clear the space. Packaging changes faster than the coverage of it.

Free removes the money risk, not the time risk, and an hour with Combinator and the two Spiders will tell you more than any device list.
