Thunder came in over Ullevi on Friday and the show came apart before it started. Sweden Herald, reporting through TT, has the storms, the heavy rain, the evacuation, and then the cancellation. A stadium crowd went home with nothing played.
What happened next took about a day. Swedish House Mafia announced a free Saturday concert at Götaplatsen through Instagram. The free set went ahead in the city centre, inside Göteborgskalaset, Gothenburg's flagship summer festival, and the moved Ullevi show played later the same evening.
TT's follow-up puts around 40,000 people at Götaplatsen and 65,972 at Ullevi that night, with Live Nation calling the second figure the largest electronic-music audience in the Nordics. Both are promoter numbers reported through TT rather than a Live Nation recap, so hold them at arm's length.
The turnaround, not the gesture
A free show for a crowd that got rained off sounds like goodwill. Putting one in a city square by the next afternoon is scheduling. Götaplatsen was already running as a festival site rather than sitting empty, Got Event operates Ullevi, and Live Nation is the organizer named on the event page. All of that had to line up on a Saturday morning, and then the same three had to play a stadium a few hours later.
The parts promoters actually argue over are still not public: what Friday ticket holders were offered, what the permit for a free central set required, how a crowd that size in a public square was staffed. Got Event's page documents none of the weekend.
We saw a smaller version of this in July, when Tomorrowland's Weekend 2 lost its large-scale fireworks to wildfire risk and the Mainstage still landed its peak.
At the Ullevi show that finally happened, Sebastian Ingrosso brought his daughter out to open Don't You Worry Child, per We Rave You. The night before, that stadium was being emptied in the rain.
