I dont remember all that much about Roger Sanchezs set but what I do remember is:
The sound was wicked and Roger Sanchez is hot. He was wearing a nice shirt and I blew him a kiss. The girls working the coat check were all in camouflage. They looked really good with their gravity defying tats and flawless tans. The drinks were handed out in cheap plastic cups. I think I danced with my arms in the air all night long. Every once in a while Id see Graham with his video camera and Id duck out of sight. The club itself is massive along the lines of the first floor of The Commodore without the tables and chairs and it screams to be the home of the best parties in Vancouver.
According to a friend of mine Sanchez only played plain, old house but I remember house that was more on the hard and techy side of things. Mind you I also remember cheesy house which would propel me towards the door. He played that Coldplay remix which I think is lame and he also played a remix of some Bob Marley tune, which was received with great delight by the public. I think he played the title track of his self-produced album Release Yourself as at some point some chick started wailing release yourself over and over and over again in the most quintessential house way imaginable needless to say, I was outside lighting up a Marlboro.
You couldnt tell that it was the grand opening of Cargo. Perhaps the organizers were too busy with the basic logistics to worry about embellishments but I think they definitely needed more of a production, prove to Vancouver that Cargo is a club to be reckoned with. (My suggestions are that they should install fake stars in ceiling and make the stage bigger and with less scaffolding. The climax of the DJ set should be accompanied by metallic confetti falling from above and a visual overdose of those penetrating rainbow lasers. And, If they plan on keeping the club predominantly house then lots of go-go dancers with perfect smiles and tiny waists are needed. The club should never be under capacity.)
I dont think Ill ever buy a Roger Sanchez album but I am definitely not antagonistic towards house anymore. If Sanchez comes back to Vancouver chances are Ill be at the front of the dancefloor blowing him kisses, hopefully coherent enough to figure out what genre of house hes playing.
