(San Francisco, CA) November 18, 2015 Occipital augments its computer vision and software capabilities with the acquisition of Lynx Laboratories.
Occipital, Inc. has announced the acquisition of Lynx Laboratories, an Austin, Texas based developer of mobile 3D scanning software. Financial details are undisclosed.
The addition of the Lynx team to Occipital will further bolster the capabilities of the core Structure Sensor and SDK platform, as well as immediately expand the reach of the Structure Sensor and SDK to new computing platforms and new industry verticals.
LYNX BRINGS IMPROVED 3D SENSING, ANDROID EXPERTISE
To date, Lynx’s focus has been on using mobile 3D sensing to solve industry-specific problems. For the past two years, Lynx has done this with their proprietary Scanner+ system, which utilizes the Structure Sensor on powerful Android tablets such as the Nvidia Shield. With the acquisition, Lynx will now bring their expertise in building industry solutions as well as Android development with the Structure Sensor to the Occipital team.
In addition to industry and Android expertise, Lynx has contributed enhancements to the Structure Sensor’s firmware and drivers that result in improved depth accuracy for all users of the Structure Sensor, regardless of platform or industry. Proprietary IP developed by Lynx can reduce the error of 3D sensors by up to 90%, which brings the Structure Sensor in line with professional-grade technologies like LIDAR, but at a much lower price.
“Lynx’s familiarity with the Structure Sensor and SDK meant that they could start contributing as part of the Occipital team from day one.” said Jeff Powers, Occipital co-founder and CEO. “We’re working together to integrate Lynx technology to improve accuracy, handle larger scale 3D reconstruction, and target new applications.”
FROM THE LYNX PERSPECTIVE
“Joining forces with Occipital allows us to tackle much bigger problems than we could alone,” said Chris Slaughter, Lynx co-founder and CEO. “Together, we can now take a full-stack approach, from optimizing 3D sensing hardware, up through delivering industry-leading user experiences. We now simply power through challenges that would’ve been roadblocks to either of our companies independently.” Slaughter now serves as VP, Verticals at Occipital.
The entire Lynx team has joined Occipital, and all Lynx technologies and intellectual property has transferred to Occipital.
