I didn't take any notes for Hernan Cattaneo's set. None were needed. He played such an incredible set, picking only perfect songs and stringing them along perfectly, with me in tow, that there was no need for notes and no way that this set will ever leave my memory.
I love Hernan.
The main reason why Hernan Cattaneo has tenure on a large chunk of my clubbing heart is because I love his flow. He always pays attention to the DJ who opens for him and he never abruptly drops a track. He paces himself and lets us warm up to him and his sound.
In the interview we did earlier that evening he admitted to the fact that sometimes pacing himself so evenly is not the best for all audiences as some people just want a banging loud night while others are so happy with the deep house that when he moves on to something a bit stronger they move on to a different club. Well, so be it, I say because there's enough bad DJs in the world that throw tracks together as if they were bits of trash into a bonfire that he shouldn't have to worry about his supreme sublimeness.
At Atlantis he began very mellow with some deep house (which I didn't like but didn't complain to anyone). It got heavier 'til it became house and then progressive house. From there he progressively got harder til he plateaued at an awesome level of loudness and was banging and then the progressive trance. His friend, Jonathan, a soft-spoken Argentine if there ever was one pointed to his watch and said, In twenty minutes you'll see, he's going to explode. And, holy mother of god, did he ever. The music that blared out of the monitors flooded the club with molten pleasure and the clubbers looked like they had been overtaken. I think I yelled out 'VAMOS about fifty times that night.
This was a great show for Cattaneo. He'd been to Vancouver once but only as an opening act for Oakenfold. His set was quiet, almost silent, and this set showed Vancouver that Cattaneo rocks it way better than any English bloke can.
