Get Together 3 @ The Waldorf

The premise of the Get Together parties is that a party comprised solely of local DJs can be as wicked as a party full of international superstars and it deserves the same sound system. By throwing this kind of party everyone gets the best of all worlds awesome sets, cheap ticket prices (tickets started at $15) and sensational talent.

In this third edition Blueprint deviated from the foolproof plan of just showcasing locals and invited Darshan Jesrani to spin and Get Together mainstay, RC Lair wasn't a headliner. He played 22:30 24:00 but the tracks he played weren't 'opening set material; he went off. Some of the tracks he played at the beginning of his set were well known, having had them on rotation since last summer, but, there were some new tracks and they were mostly killer. People went nuts when he played Owner of a Lonely Heart but the true gem was the track that followed: a remixed version of Mylo's Destroy Rock 'n Roll. How everyone didn't get off their asses and start flailing like they were four year olds hearing The Mini Pops for the first time is a puzzle. Songs that use vocals as another musical layer are phenomenal and this track, with it's determined bass and sexy beat, will probably be played at every after party you'll attend this summer. The other highlight was him playing Detroit Grand Pubhas Sandwiches over top New Order's Blue Monday. He had them perfectly synchronized the entire time. The man is a musical genius: who would have divined that such random songs would have complimented each other so well? He was definitely the best part of the show.

Barely a few minutes past midnight ad Jesrani was behind the decks. People had been stoked for Jesrani's appearance because as part of New York's Metro Area he makes smooth and sometimes sweet (as in the opposite of salty) electro house that's nice to drink tea to or get your mind off the traffic jam you're fuming in. The track Miura could lull anyone into bliss.

None of Metro Area's grace or rhythm was apparent in his set. In fact, you couldn't tell that he's been a DJ for ages. His first song had nothing in common with RC's last. He went on a tangent, completely oblivious to the fact that RC was spinning electro house and breaks and that Get Together's main room is primarily house and electro. Within twenty minutes the room RC had packed was barren. Even when the other two rooms had turned off the music no one really returned to the main room, they just left. Jesrani's started out funky but within a few tracks he was playing music that was more ambient than anything else. At one point all that came out of the monitors was a crackling sound (kind of like what you hear after a record finishes) and the the guy was bouncing behind the turntables with his fists held to his chest smiling like he was playing the best set of his life. Even if it had been he should have noticed that he had purged the room like a rancid odor.

The other rooms were packed. Not just because Jesrani was being selfish but because the locals were killing it. In the Tiki Room were OJ & Shakes, and Soda & Priceless. There's a particular type of energy that breakbeat extracts from its admirers and the place was basically on fire.

Upstairs, in the lounge, DJ Timeline and My!Gay!Husband! were tagging. The lounge upstairs is gorgeous. You'd never think that a low-budget east-side hotel would have such a stylish lounge. The dance floor isn't demarcated so there's a lot of foot traffic but instead of it being annoying it creates this chaotic but friendly atmosphere every few minutes you'll inadvertently find yourself pointed in a different direction, dancing with, smiling at and talking to a new group of people. The seating area circles around the dance floor and that's where you'll find the DJ booth. On the walls are gorgeous oil paintings of Polynesian natives which are encased in glass and beautiful frames. The ceiling is painted and lighted a brilliant blue and there are glittering stars. Timeline was a huge hit with the crowd. My!Gay!Husband! trainwrecked a lot.

The next Get Together (April 23) will be back on track. RC will be front and centre with Timeline (and MC Danny D) in the main room and Vancouver old-school idols DJ Tyler T-Bone Stadius and DJ Ali will be going off in the Tiki Room. Upstairs you'll find David Alvarado and Marcello.
