Once you have seen Captain Comatose you will love disco. Honestly.
Captain Comatose is Snax and Khan. Snax and Khan are lots of things but when they are Captain Comatose they are singers in a disco cover band. They take older songs (like Jungle Fever) and turn them into psychotropic disco anthems that every generation, political party, blood type, food group, and single-cell organism can enjoy.
They are so great that their greatness is multi-dimensional.
First of all, they are exceptional performers. Within seconds of stepping onstage they captivated everyones attention (even the drunks at the private party upstairs). They were so exuberant that it seemed that they were marionettes that had just come to life and cut off their strings. They pranced, danced, posed, played with the audience members and had synchronized dance routines. Sometimes they would just go off, bust an inspired move with zero regard for the shows itinerary.
They were so larger-than-life it was like watching a real life IMAX show.
Furthermore, they can sing. There are tonnes of groups out there that write good songs and put on great shows but have horrible voices. Snax and Khans voices were strong and controlled. They manipulated their chords with creativity and knowledge. Sometimes their voices would go separate ways but they would always match, always land in the proper place. It was akin to hearing two male voices in a musical theatre show.
Third, if you are going to be a cover band you have an endless supply of songs to work with. I think it must take a lot of work to decide which song to take on. A good song doesnt necessarily mean a track that has already been a hit. It has to be a song that you can make better, add something that the creator missed or manipulate by a means that didnt exist back in the day. Its really hard work and Captain Comatose scored with every single song they performed.
There were many highlights to the show such as when Khan took off his shirt and displayed a pair of red suspenders that had the Turkish symbol repeated they were dope. As well, they ended the show by belting out They said Captain, I said What? and had us yelling along. Snax also held a super high note for at least half a minute.
So Captain Comatose is pretty rad. They were a great surprise in the sense that I heard good music and I was propelled into a frenzy of dancing when I least expected it.
VAMOS CAPTAIN!!!
