Rothbury built the setting
The festival takes place at the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, Michigan. The site gives Electric Forest something most large festivals cannot copy: a real wooded centre between its stages and campgrounds. Sherwood Forest becomes a venue inside the venue, filled with light, installations, characters and small performances that reward anyone willing to leave the shortest route between sets.
The event began as Rothbury Festival in 2008 and returned in 2009. After a year off, it came back under the Electric Forest name in 2011. That history still shows in the booking. Electronic music drives much of the weekend, but jam bands and live acts remain part of the festival rather than a side programme.
Participation is part of the booking
Electric Forest treats the crowd as more than an audience. Its Plug In programmes invite people to contribute projects and performances, while the campground and forest create space for ideas that would disappear inside a city festival. The result is less about rushing through a timetable and more about choosing how deep into the site you want to go.
That scale can be demanding. Four days of camping, long walks and competing stages need planning. The payoff is a festival whose strongest memories often happen between the headline sets, when the route through the trees turns into the night's main event.
