A brand-new park gets a brand-new festival
CRSSD debuted March 14-15, 2015, at Waterfront Park, a downtown San Diego park that had only just opened. The event was built by FNGRS CRSSD, a promotion company running out of the LA club Sound and San Diego's Bang Bang, working with Goldenvoice to get the first edition off the ground. The debut lineup mixed techno-circuit names like Seth Troxler and Maceo Plex with electronic-pop acts Chromeo and Breakbot and veterans like Pete Tong and DJ Harvey, and premiered the one-off supergroup Pleasure State, pairing MK, Lee Foss, and Anabel Englund.
Twice a year, same formula
The festival settled into a twice-yearly rhythm, spring and fall, that it has kept ever since, reaching its tenth anniversary in 2025. Three stages, Ocean View, City Steps, and The Palms, spread across the park's fountains, lawns, and Pacific-facing walking paths, mixing house, techno, electro, and indie dance across two days each visit.
Built on the outdoor festival blueprint
CRSSD's organizers have cited European outdoor festivals like Sonar and BPM as reference points, aiming for daytime programming that shifts into a waterfront night set rather than a single headline-driven bill. The result reads less like a typical American EDM festival and more like a curated day party that happens to run past sunset, with San Diego's skyline and bay as a constant backdrop.
