The participants make the event

AfrikaBurn does not separate the audience from the programme in the usual festival way. Participants build the art, theme camps, performances, services, music spaces and mutant vehicles that form the temporary community. Quaggafontein in the Tankwa Karoo is the physical setting, but contribution is the operating system.

Music as a gift

DJs and musicians perform without an expectation of payment, placing sound inside the event's decommodified culture. That changes how to read AfrikaBurn from an electronic-music perspective. There is no conventional bill that explains the whole experience. Dancefloors emerge from what participants bring, alongside costume, large-scale art and the work required to make a week in the desert function. The result is less a product to consume than a world people agree to build together.
