Beams is like fucking between old and dirty sheets. You melt away while being sickened; lulled into the most disgusting convulsion of your life. And it's not over when it's over. The smoothness from that worn cotton and the glisten from the accumulation of other people's natural oil saturates you but not enough that you can't feel it when you're putting your shirt back on. Even after a shower.
When you turn off your iPod you're still going to be electric with the lead singer's yelps, you're going to hear the synthesizers, and the hand-claps are going to resonate inside of you. Hopefully you're headed somewhere private.
Not all the songs are raw but they all have a terse and urgent feeling about them. There are no inhibitions in any of the songs. None. And you can feel it even more when it's time to have the privilege of seeing them live. The way Julian grabs onto the mike's cord and Kim convulses when he's not smacking away at the keyboards or drums. When I walked in on them the lead singer was crooning Girl and the Sea and even though it is so demure, the lyrics infect like a first kiss. It's no coincidence that one of their albums has a photo of two captured scorpions.
Then there are the remixed versions. Digitalism's take on Down Down Down is so manic that you'll dance yourself into a wall. The Simian Mobile Disco Remix of Are You the One? is equally provocative.
I hope this isn't a one night stand. I want more.
