The longest running underground music festival in Vancouver has changed its format. The once all night gig has switched its gears and is now an all day festival. Perhaps trying to emulate the success of Moby's Area 1 last summer. I'm not sure.. Packed with newly added features like a skate/BMX demo, and porn star host Ron Jeremy its hard to say what peoples reaction will be.
They have a strong emphasis on house and hip-hop this year compared to previous years. The headliners include Subliminal Records guru Erik Morillo and hip-hop acts Q-bert and Tony Touch. Although I was a bit disappointed that the Swollen Members werent on the roster this year.
After Summerlove 2001 did not do as well as expected, they had to make some changes. Its great if a show is good and people all leave with smiles on their faces, but at the end of the day all the numbers have to add up. With an easier accessible venue (UBC Thunderbird Stadium), more mainstream acts, and some bigger sponsors I think Summerlove is trying to turn things around this year.
Yes they have changed things up but I would rather have a modified Summerlove rather than no Summerlove at all. I am a little shocked by the transformation, but I must say that things still look promising. After all, Area 1 was a blast last summer so it is proven that the daytime formula works.
The DJVIBE.com crew will be there in full force capturing all the mayhem that takes place. So I will see you all there on August 31, 2002 @ Thunderbird Stadium for Summerlove 2002.
