Today (11/11), rising Los Angeles-based Alternative R&B and fashion-forward artist SUGAR JOANS has independently released her debut single “NVR.“ Earlier this week, SUGAR partnered with POPMATTERS.COM to give her fans an early listen to the song which showcases pulsating beats and spectral electronic flourishes that frame her compelling voice. “NVR” can be streamed via SoundCloud here (embed code below) and purchased at iTunes here or Amazon here.
“I feel like everyone has that one person in their life that they can’t help but think ‘what if?'” SUGAR tells POP MATTERS. “No matter how messed up or complicated the relationship was, it still has a hold on you. And you want to think that if things were different or if you hadn’t walked away, that maybe it would have changed. That feeling has haunted me for years, so now I just write songs about it.”
This time last year, SUGAR JOANS was competing on Pharrell Williams‘ team during season 7 of the hit NBC network singing competition THE VOICE. “The experience was phenomenal,” says SUGAR. “People have no idea how hard it is, physically and emotionally.” “NVR”–produced by Chris Hartz (drummer for Passion Pit and Childish Gambino)–establishes SUGAR‘s artistic vision. Those who only know the television version of SUGAR JOANS have witnessed only an edited segment of the story. She is much more audacious than a small screen image can project and resoundingly genuine. “When I’m in that room making that music, I’m being as true to myself as I can be. I don’t think I should ever try to edit or censor that.
