Red Bull is holding its fifth 'Red Bull Music Academy' and this year its location is Sao Paolo, Brazil.
The Red Bull Music Academy is an electronic music conference which deals with all aspects of the music industry. It is unlike most other music festivals because it lasts a month instead of a few days and the main focus is on learning during the day and not partying during the night (though there are evening events being held as well).
The Academy's mandate is to provide a platform for the exchange of musical knowledge and ideas. The participants learn from one another through exchanging ideas and demonstrating personal techniques. Red Bull also invites individuals (i.e. djs, producers, distributors, label managers, inventors) to lecture and lead workshops.
This year there will be a focus on music history, technique and skills, technology and DJ culture. The history lectures will be on dub, reggae, techno, breakbeat, hip hop, drum 'n' bass, and ambient. The workshops surrounding dj technique and skill will focus on the science of music, selection vs. technique and methodology. There will also be some workshops on more abstract concepts which are normally overlooked (gender, values, ethics) as well as some on purely financial topics.
The first Red Bull Music Academy took place in Berlin in 1998. About 50 djs and producers from Germany and Austria were invited to attend workshops on music history, technology, and business. In 1999 it was also held in Berlin. In 2000 the host city was Dublin and in 2001, New York. Last year the Academy was held in London.
