Though dj culture is becoming increasingly popular with the masses, there is yet an in-depth documentary which tries to portray the lives of those men and women.
The movie Maestro, directed by Josell Ramos, tries to accurately capture the intense experience of the people who were responsible for underground dance music that influenced the world. Maestro attempts to emulate the intense lifestyle these DJs have and their unflinching loyalty to the sound that they produce. The director attempts to show that DJs are modern day maestros (which provide) environments where our spirits, creativity, passion and diversity both thrived and flourished.
This documentary centres itself around DJ Larry Levan, an early vanguard DJ whom is overlooked because of his early death and lack of recordings. Maestro also follows Danny Tenaglia, Frankie Knuckles, Francois K, Sven Vath, Mark Oliver, and Derrick Carters as well as many others.
Currently Maestro is on the film festival circuit. It will have its theatrical debut in North America and England in early 2003.
