Ministry of Sound has plans to move a 150 year old monument for its New Years Bash.



MoS just announced that it has plans to move Nelsons column from Trafalgar Square to their New Years party at the Millennium Dome. Their press representative reported that they would transpose the 165ft high column to the dome (which only happens to be 7ft higher than the column) by cutting the column into four pieces, transporting the column through London via a series of police escorted low-loaders, and then rebuilding the monument at the Dome. MoS plans to return the column to its proper home within seven days.



Mos made its official application to Ken Livingstone (the mayor of London) and Roger Bright, the Chief Executive and Commissioner of the Crown Estate to seek permission.



Obviously, theres a lot of opposition. Trafalgar Square is one of the most important places in London as it is right in the centre of the city and the square itself was built in commemoration of Englands victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The Battle was won by Admiral Nelson and his statue is the squares centrepiece. Nelsons Column supports a large statue of Nelson and it is guarded by four bronze lions at the base. Nelson, atop the column, looks minute from the ground but he is actually 18ft high.



This move isnt just a publicity stunt. Ken Livingstone has plans to restrict access to Trafalgar Square this New Years even though the square has always been a main hub of excitement and revelry each New Years eve. MoS states it wants Londoners to be able to party around Nelsons column like they always have albeit in a totally different environment and at a cost much greater than free.
