"making a mixtape with latin mafia and staying here until we finish it (hour 51)". That is the actual title on the stream, counter and all. Nobody was promoting a record. They were making one, on camera, and you could watch the clock run.
Fred again.. and LATIN MAFIA set up in a Mexico City studio at the end of July and left the camera on. YouTube billed it as a three-day stream; DJ Mag counted two days of studio work; the title kept ticking to hour 51. Fans sat in the live comments the whole time, and YouTube's own writeup says those comments helped the pair "crowdsource ideas, test out new sounds". Days later the tape landed as 9 months & 50 hours. They debuted it at a sold-out Palacio de los Deportes, and on 13 August they released the full audio from that show.
Stream, mixtape, live album, and nowhere in there a month of teaser posts.
Premiere, not trailer
Arca arrived at the same place from the other side. On 23 July she aired Diva.Experimental, directed by Daniel Sannwald and styled by Akeem Smith, announced as an immersive "glimpse into the album's world ahead of its official release". XXXXX, 16 tracks on XL Recordings, followed on 31 July, with DJ Mag's Tazmé Pillay reviewing it the same day. The stream was not advertising the album. It was the first place you could hear it.
Then the festival version of the same idea. Amazon Music streamed Outside Lands for the fifth consecutive year across 7-9 August, and for the first time ran two concurrent channels so viewers could switch stages instead of taking whichever set the broadcast chose for them. That window has already closed, and nobody has reported back on how it actually played.
None of this appeared from nowhere. On 27 July, a day before the camera went on in Mexico City, Fred again.. and LATIN MAFIA put out under the fabric, a 35-minute film of a spontaneous live session they had shot the previous December. They were already filming the process. Now they are shipping it while it happens.
