222–the Los Angeles-based duo who creatively blend alternative rock, rooted in the ’80s and ’90s, with modern dance flair–today (2/22) released their sophomore album, I’M NOT TRYING TO BE YOU…JUST KIDDING I’M TRYING TO BE YOU via Howlin Hamard Records. The 11-track self-produced album can be purchased via iTunes here. To celebrate the album’s release, 222 will have their album release show on Thursday, March 2 at Lucky Strike in Hollywood, CA. Performance starts at 9:30pm and admission is free.
The co-ed duo of vocalist Jade Howard and vocalist/guitarist Dennis Hamlin create a sound that’s both irresistible and mysterious on I’M NOT TRYING TO BE YOU…, the follow-up to 222’s 2015 debut album, Libretto. The hooks keep coming-and so do the left turns-on the new album. Highlights include title cut, “Heart Tied In A Knot,” “Dream Trigger,” “The Mortician” and “Everywhere We Go”-which Jade admits “might be our favorite song off the record. It takes place on the road but follows me into my dreams when I dose off in the car while Dennis drives.” Read full album track-by-track below.
The band will also be performing on March 25 at The Complex in Glendale, CA and on April 29 at Bar Sinister in Hollywood, CA. Plans to launch a tour in the spring are forthcoming.

“I’m Not Trying to Be You”
Dennis: “This is about Jade and I moving to Los Angeles from our small towns and slowly becoming each other from being around each other so much.” Jade: “We have gotten to the point where we don’t have to talk. We just start doing the same thing or get ready to go somewhere together.”
“The Perfect Sunday”
Jade:“This is one of my favorites. It’s about the day you wait for all week where you can just get up have drinks with breakfast and come home and nap, get up and start over. That’s a perfect day for me.”
“Dysfunctional”
Dennis: “Jade and I have worked on a slew of reality T.V shows out here in Los Angeles with our sound company and we have seen a lot! This song unfortunately embodies some of the great relationships we’ve bared to witness.”
“The Mortician”
Jade: “This one’s fun because we initially started it as a dark joke about a Mortician that would fall in love with her clients but when Dennis started writing it, the story took on a whole new life.” Dennis:“Yeah it ended up more about the world of this Mortician and how she would insert herself in the past lives of these families who brought in their deceased.”
“She’s Gone”
Dennis: “This is about past relationship’s feeling like deaths for whatever reason. You spend every waking moment with this person for years and now it’s all over and it’s like they never existed yet you own each other’s lives for that time.”
“Dream Trigger”
Jade: “Early on in a relationship when one person knows they want the other and the other one isn’t sure yet, this gun could do the trick. Just aim, and pull the trigger.”
“Has the Whole World Gone Mad”?
Dennis: “When your best friend shows up at your door married to someone you haven’t met yet, that might be the first sign. We love playing this one live! It has a unique energy to it both classic and new.”
“Across the Great Divide”
Jade: “This one is about a long distance relationship between a couple on Earth and Mars.”
Dennis: “I was actually working on a Mars series for Nat Geo and it got me thinking about all of the inconveniences surrounding making the sacrifice to taking a mission like that.”
“Everywhere We Go”
Jade: “This might beour favorite song off the record. It takes place on the road but follows me into my dreams when I dose off in the car while Dennis drives.”
“Heart Tied in a Knot”
Jade: “When you’re ruled by your heart the world seems to be against you. We know a few people like this.”
“My Best Friend in the Woods”
Dennis: “This one takes place when a son is visiting his parents at the house he grew up in. While hanging out in his parents’ back yard one night he hears a familiar voice coming from inside the nearby woods. When he goes to investigate it, he finds his old best friend from childhood whom he never thought he’d see again.”
