‘SUPER SUNSET’ DUE OUT LATER THIS FALL
“The music video for lead single ‘Not So Bad In LA,’ which premieres today exclusively on i-D, portrays the transformative journey of just one of her many self-reflective archetypes: the Hollywood starlet. ‘She’s usually gonna be blonde, and she’s really the one who represents the desperation and the glamour of wanting to be famous-the delusion that you fall into.’ Then there’s the ‘nun‘ character who ‘represents pure artistic drive, the musical and spiritual side of art, the beautiful side of wanting to make art.’ And lastly is the ‘sci-fi girl’ who is ‘retro future and encapsulates all the weird, disconnected, quirky things about me that you see Allie X as,’ she explains, like a theatre kid with a hyperactive imagination. ‘That’s usually how people identify me- like, she’s kind of cold, or witch-like, or like an alien. Drawing from real life events over her last four years in Los Angeles, from the mundane to the magical, indie & electro-pop artist ALLIE X offers one of her most lyrically personal works to date on her most recent single “Not So Bad In Los Angeles,” which will appear on her new body of work Super Sunset due out later this fall. Today (August 9), the alternative-pop artist unveils its corresponding video via I-D.
Shot in the desert that outskirts X‘s current home of Los Angeles, the video features her in her ‘Super Sunset’ Hollywood starlet persona. It starts with
X arriving to L.A. (still dark hair) all innocent and naive. As the video progresses we watch her evolve and change (on to blonde hair), capturing
X in a variety of vintage glamour looks styled by Lisa Katnic.
Born Alexandra Hughes, the Toronto native who now calls Los Angeles home emerged on the scene as something of a mystery and ever since has been peeling back the layers, revealing more about herself. The singer/songwriter’s 2015 debut album Collxtion I was a critically lauded, supercharged pop record that explored the world of X–a place that provides a sanctuary for those unresolved fragments of self, those parts of you that still don’t feel whole or fulfilled. X is the possibility of anything, an identity you can take on while you find your truth. “I’m not an obvious pick,” she says of her rising star thus far. “I’ve always had to find hidden roads to be understood.” Along the way, she has garnered the support from fellow female musical outsiders as Katy Perry, Grimes and Tove Lo as well with her passionate LGBTQ-identifying fans.
